Emotion is perhaps the most personal and universal language we share. It shapes how we remember, connect, and understand the world, yet it often remains difficult to express in words. Art offers a space for what cannot easily be spoken, allowing feelings to take form through colour, gesture, material, and silence. Throughout art history, emotion has remained central to artistic expression, not only through the subjects artists choose to represent, but also through the physical act of making, the tension of a line, the intensity of a colour, or the absence of detail. Sometimes, what an artwork leaves unsaid carries as much emotional weight as what it reveals.

For this exhibition, No. 35 Gallery received over 500 submissions from artists across nearly 20 countries, from which 80 artworks were selected to form the final exhibition. This selection reflects a diversity of artistic approaches and emotional experiences, revealing how deeply emotion connects us despite differences in culture, geography, and personal history. From vulnerability and grief to tenderness, joy, anger, and longing, the works approach emotion not simply as a subject, but as a force that shapes artistic expression. Some artists turn inward, drawing from intimate memories, personal struggles, and moments of transformation, while others examine collective experiences, social tensions, and the emotional consequences of living in an uncertain world.

Emotion brings together distinct artistic voices without seeking a single interpretation of what it means to feel. The exhibition moves between the deeply personal and the collectively recognisable, between works that confront their subjects directly and those that communicate through abstraction, symbolism, and ambiguity. Rather than offering fixed meanings, these works leave room for the viewer's own memories and emotional responses. In doing so, the exhibition invites us to recognise something of ourselves in the experiences of others, reminding us that even our most private feelings can become a point of connection.
